Bathroom cleaning schedule: daily, weekly and monthly
A bathroom cleaning schedule has three layers. Every day: wipe the sink, squeegee the shower and hang the towels to dry. Every week: clean the toilet, the sink, the tub or shower, the mirror and the floor, and wash the towels. Every month: the grout, the fan cover, the showerhead, the drains and the cabinets. Stick to it and the bathroom rarely needs a whole weekend.
Why use a schedule?
- Nothing builds up. Soap scum a week old wipes off. Soap scum three months old takes scrubbing.
- Less mildew. A bathroom wiped and aired daily stays drier.
- It stays close to guest-ready. No panic cleaning when someone's on the way.
- It's easy to share. Post the list and anyone in the house can take a job.
- It's quicker overall. Small, regular jobs take less time than one big one.
What do you do every day?
Two or three minutes:
- Wipe the sink, faucet and counter after the morning routine
- Squeegee the shower glass and tile walls after each shower
- Run the fan during the shower and for about 20 minutes after
- Hang towels and the bath mat spread out to dry
- Put bottles back where they live
What do you do every week?
| Job | How |
|---|---|
| Toilet | Bowl cleaner under the rim, scrub, flush, then wipe the outside from the tank to the base |
| Sink and counter | Scrub the basin and faucet base, clean the stopper |
| Tub or shower | Spray, let it sit, scrub top down, rinse, squeegee |
| Mirror | Spray the cloth, wipe top to bottom, buff dry |
| Touch points | Light switches, door handle, cabinet pulls, the flush handle |
| Floor | Vacuum or sweep behind the toilet, then mop |
| Towels and mat | Wash them |
| Trash | Empty it and wipe the can |
The step-by-step is in our guide on how to clean a bathroom, top to bottom.
What do you do every month?
- Grout: scrub the lines with a grout brush. See how to clean grout.
- Exhaust fan cover: vacuum it, and take it down to wash a couple of times a year. See how to clean a bathroom exhaust fan.
- Showerhead: soak it in a bag of white vinegar to clear mineral buildup, if the finish allows it.
- Drains: pull the hair out and flush with hot water.
- Baseboards, door frame and window sill: dust and wipe.
- Cabinets and drawers: empty one, wipe it, toss what's expired.
- Shower curtain liner: wash it, or replace it if it's spotted.
- Light fixture: dust it, with the light off and cool.
What about once or twice a year?
- Clean the toilet tank. See how to clean a toilet.
- Check the caulk around the tub and sink. If it's cracked or black underneath, recaulking is a small repair job.
- Wash the walls and the ceiling, especially above the shower.
- Clear out the medicine cabinet.
How do you make it stick?
- Tie the weekly clean to one day.
- Keep the kit in the bathroom, under the sink, so there's no trip to fetch it.
- Do the monthly jobs on the first weekend of the month.
- In a rowhome with one bathroom for the whole house, the daily wipe matters more. Everyone uses it, so everyone does their part.
