How to clean a bathroom exhaust fan

March 20, 2024

To clean a bathroom exhaust fan, switch it off at the wall and the breaker, pull the cover down, and wash the cover in warm soapy water. Vacuum the dust off the blades and out of the housing with a brush attachment, wipe them with a barely damp cloth, let everything dry, and clip the cover back. Twice a year keeps it a short job.

A fan coated in dust moves less air, and a bathroom that stays steamy is where mildew starts.

Why does a dusty fan matter?

The fan's whole job is to pull warm, wet air out of the room. Lint and dust collect on the cover grille and the blades, and every layer cuts the airflow. The steam that should leave hangs around instead, and it settles on the ceiling, the grout and the window frame.

What do you need?

  • A sturdy step stool, not a chair
  • A vacuum with a brush attachment and a crevice tool
  • A sink or bucket of warm water with a few drops of dish soap
  • An old toothbrush or a soft dish brush
  • Two microfiber cloths
  • A screwdriver, in case your cover is held by a screw

How do you clean a bathroom exhaust fan, step by step?

  1. Cut the power. Turn the fan off at the switch, then flip its breaker if you can find it. You'll have your fingers near the blades.
  2. Drop the cover. A typical cover hangs on two metal spring clips. Pull the cover down a couple of inches, squeeze the clips together, and slide them out of their slots. Some older covers have a center screw instead.
  3. Wash the cover. Soak it in the warm soapy water for ten minutes, scrub the grille with the toothbrush, rinse it and stand it up to dry.
  4. Vacuum the fan. Run the brush attachment over the blades and around the inside of the housing. The crevice tool reaches the corners.
  5. Wipe what's left. Use a cloth that's damp, not wet, on the blades and the housing. Never spray cleaner or water into the motor.
  6. Dry and refit. Make sure the cover is completely dry, squeeze the clips back into their slots, and push it up flush to the ceiling.
  7. Power back on and run the fan for a minute to check it.

How do you know the fan is working?

Try the tissue test. With the fan running, hold a single square of toilet paper flat against the grille. If the fan holds it there, the air is moving. If the paper drops, or the bathroom mirror still fogs and stays fogged long after a shower, something past the cover is the problem.

That could be a duct that's crushed, disconnected or blocked, or a motor that's worn out. Loud rattling or grinding points the same way. Those are jobs for an electrician or contractor, not a cleaning job.

How do you keep the bathroom drier between cleanings?

  • Turn the fan on when the shower starts, and leave it on for about 20 minutes after.
  • Squeegee the glass and tile walls after each shower.
  • Hang towels and the bath mat to dry, spread out, not bunched on a hook.
  • Leave the shower curtain pulled closed so it dries flat.
  • Prop the door open a little once you're done.

If the corners of the ceiling or the grout keep going dark, the room is staying wet too long. The full routine for the room is in our guide on how to clean a bathroom, top to bottom, and grout has its own guide.

FAQ

How often should you clean a bathroom exhaust fan? Every six months is a good rhythm. Clean it more often if the bathroom gets several showers a day, or as soon as you see a gray fuzz of dust on the cover.

Can you clean a bathroom fan without removing the cover? For a quick pass, yes: vacuum the grille with a brush attachment. For a real clean, take the cover down, because the dust that slows the fan sits on the blades and inside the housing.

Why is my bathroom fan not pulling air? Clean the cover and blades, then hold a square of toilet paper to the grille with the fan running. If the paper still won't hold, the duct may be blocked or the motor worn, so have an electrician or contractor look at it.

How long should a bathroom fan run after a shower? Leave it on for about 20 minutes after the shower ends so the steam clears. A timer switch makes that automatic, and an electrician can fit one.
