15 bathroom cleaning mistakes and what to do instead

March 07, 2024

The bathroom cleaning mistakes that waste time or do real damage are mixing cleaners, wiping a spray off before it has worked, using one cloth from the toilet to the sink, cleaning in the wrong order, and putting vinegar or abrasives on surfaces that can't take them. Here are all 15, with what to do instead.

Which mistakes are about safety?

1. Mixing cleaners. Bleach plus ammonia, vinegar or other acids releases dangerous fumes. So can bleach plus some toilet bowl cleaners. Use one product at a time, rinse between them, and never combine bottles.

2. Cleaning with the door shut. Bathrooms are small. Run the fan and open a window, especially with bleach or strong sprays.

3. Skipping gloves. Bathroom cleaners are hard on skin. Rubber gloves, every time.

Which mistakes waste time?

4. Wiping too soon. Cleaners and disinfectants need contact time on the label, and the surface has to stay wet that whole time. Spray the tub, shower and toilet first, then go do something else.

5. Cleaning in the wrong order. Work top to bottom: fan and high spots, then the sink and counter, tub or shower, toilet, and the floor last. Otherwise dust and drips land on what you've already done.

6. Using too much product. More spray doesn't mean cleaner. It leaves a sticky film that attracts dirt and takes longer to rinse off.

7. Not clearing surfaces first. Bottles, toothbrush holders and soap dishes off the counter and out of the shower before you start. You can't clean around clutter.

8. Mopping before you vacuum. Hair and dust on the floor turn to paste when they get wet. Vacuum or sweep before you mop.

Which mistakes spread germs?

9. One cloth for everything. Use separate cloths for the toilet and for everything else. Color-coding helps: one color for the toilet, another for the sink and counter.

10. Forgetting the toilet brush. After cleaning, rinse it in clean flushing water, let it drip dry over the bowl with the seat holding the handle, and wash or replace the holder now and then.

11. Skipping the touch points. The flush handle, the faucet handles, the light switch and the door handle get touched every day.

Which mistakes do damage?

12. Vinegar on stone. It etches marble, travertine and limestone, and repeated use wears unsealed grout. Use a cleaner made for stone.

13. Abrasives on the wrong surface. Scouring powder and steel wool scratch acrylic tubs, fiberglass showers, chrome and glazed porcelain. Scratches hold dirt and stains. Use a non-scratch sponge.

14. Not rinsing. Leftover cleaner dries into a film and soap scum comes back faster. Rinse surfaces with clean water and dry the shiny ones.

Which mistake lets the mess come back?

15. Leaving it wet. Mildew needs damp. Run the fan during and after every shower, squeegee the walls, spread the curtain out, and hang the bath mat to dry. Our mold and mildew guide covers what to do when it's already there.

How do you put it together?

Once a week: spray the tub, shower and toilet; dust the fan and high spots; clean the sink and counter; scrub the tub or shower; clean the toilet; vacuum and mop the floor; and run the fan. Our bathroom cleaning schedule spreads the bigger jobs over the month.

FAQ

What cleaners should you never mix? Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other acids, or with other cleaners. The mixes can release dangerous fumes. Use one product, rinse, and ventilate the room.

How long should you leave bathroom cleaner on before wiping? As long as the label says. Cleaners and disinfectants list a contact time on the label, often a few minutes, and the surface has to stay wet that whole time. Wiping right after spraying mostly moves the dirt around.

What order should you clean a bathroom in? Spray the tub, shower and toilet first so the cleaner can sit. Then work top to bottom: high spots and the fan, then the sink and counter, the tub or shower, the toilet last, and the floor at the very end.

Is vinegar safe on all bathroom surfaces? No. Vinegar is an acid and etches natural stone like marble, travertine and limestone, and it can wear down unsealed grout over time. Use a cleaner made for stone on those surfaces.
