Pool area cleaning tips for the deck, gear and house
Good pool area cleaning comes down to three zones. On the deck, sweep often and scrub with warm soapy water and a stiff brush, rinsing away from the pool. With the gear, rinse and dry floats, toys and towels before they're stored. In the house, set up a towel station and a mat at the door so wet feet and chlorine don't soak the floors. Leave the water chemistry to your pool's manual or a pool service.
This is about the space around the pool. The pool itself, its water and its equipment follow the maker's and your pool service's directions.
How do you clean the pool deck?
- Sweep or blow it off daily in season. Leaves and grit make the deck slick and end up in the water.
- Scrub weekly with warm soapy water and a stiff deck brush.
- Rinse away from the pool, so soap doesn't run into the water.
- Slick or green spots: a deck cleaner made for your surface, concrete, pavers, stone or composite, used by the label.
- Check for hazards while you're at it: loose pavers, raised edges, anything that could trip someone barefoot.
How do you clean pool furniture?
- Resin and plastic loungers: warm soapy water and a sponge, rinse, dry in the sun.
- Sling chairs: scrub the fabric with soapy water and a soft brush, rinse well; sunscreen builds up where heads and arms rest.
- Metal frames: soapy water, then dry them to stop rust.
- Cushions: by the tag; store them in a deck box when it rains.
How do you look after pool gear?
- Rinse floats and toys with fresh water, dry them, and store them out of the sun.
- Hang towels to dry after every use. A damp pile is how pool towels start to smell.
- Wash swimsuits by their label, and rinse them in cool water after every swim.
- Keep a bin by the door for goggles, sunscreen and the stuff that otherwise ends up on the kitchen counter.
How do you keep the pool out of the house?
- A towel station by the back door: hooks, a basket of dry towels, a hamper for wet ones.
- A mat outside and an absorbent runner inside.
- Flip-flops stay outside.
- Mop at the door at the end of each pool day, and dry the floor, especially on hardwood. Our mopping guide covers it.
The same setup works after a shore day. Our sand guide covers that.
