How to get sand out of your house after the shore
To get sand out of your house, stop it at the door first: shake out towels, bags and shoes outside, brush sandy feet with baby powder, and leave the beach gear in a bin by the door. For what gets in, let it dry, then vacuum slowly with a crevice tool along edges and stair treads before you mop. Mopping wet sand just spreads it.
Coming home from the shore means sand in the car, the hall and the stairs for a week. A short routine at the door saves the rest of the house.
How do you stop sand at the door?
- A bin or tote by the door for all the beach gear. It gets emptied outside, not in the hall.
- Baby powder or cornstarch for feet and legs. Sprinkle, brush, and the sand drops off dry.
- A bucket of water or the hose for feet, if you have a yard or a stoop to do it on.
- Shake everything outside: towels, chairs, bags, shoes, the umbrella.
- A coarse mat outside and an absorbent one inside.
How do you get sand off floors?
- Let it dry. Damp sand clings; dry sand vacuums up.
- Vacuum, don't sweep. Sweeping flicks sand into corners. Use the hard-floor setting and the crevice tool along baseboards and under radiators.
- Mop only after. Our mopping guide covers it. Grit under a mop scratches hardwood.
How do you get sand out of carpet and stairs?
- Small rugs: take them outside and shake or beat them.
- Wall-to-wall: loosen the sand with a stiff brush, then vacuum slowly in two directions with the beater bar on.
- Carpeted stairs: a crevice tool at the back of each tread, top to bottom. A rowhome staircase collects sand at every step.
Our vacuuming guide covers the technique.
How do you get sand out of towels, clothes and gear?
- Towels: dry them, shake them hard, then a no-heat dryer cycle before washing. Clean the lint trap.
- Swimsuits: rinse in cool fresh water, turn inside out, shake when dry.
- Bags and coolers: turn them inside out and vacuum the seams.
- Sand toys and chairs: rinse with the hose, dry in the sun.
What about the car?
Shake the floor mats, then vacuum with the crevice tool along seat tracks and seams. A stiff brush loosens sand from carpet before the vacuum gets it.

FAQ
How do you get sand out of carpet? Let any damp sand dry first. Beat or shake small rugs outside. On wall-to-wall carpet, go over it with a stiff brush to loosen the sand, then vacuum slowly with the beater bar on, in two directions, and use the crevice tool along the edges.
How do you get sand off your feet and kids? Sprinkle baby powder or cornstarch on sandy skin and brush it off. It soaks up the moisture that makes sand stick. A bucket of water or a hose at the door works too.
How do you get sand out of beach towels? Shake them hard outside, let them dry, then shake again; dry sand falls out much more easily. Run them through the dryer on no heat for a few minutes before washing, and clean the lint trap after.
