How to keep an office kitchen clean: a shared plan
To keep an office kitchen clean, split the work in three. Everyone cleans up after themselves, under a few short posted rules. Someone wipes the counters, sink, handles and appliance buttons every day. And the fridge, microwave, coffee maker and dishwasher each get a regular deep clean on a schedule with a name next to it. The fridge clear-out happens on one set day every week.
A shared kitchen gets messy because nobody owns it. Giving each job an owner fixes most of that.
What should the kitchen rules say?
Keep it to five lines and post them where people see them:
- Wash your dishes or load them in the dishwasher. Nothing left in the sink.
- Wipe up what you spill.
- Cover your food in the microwave.
- Label your food in the fridge with your name and the date.
- The fridge is cleared every Friday afternoon. Anything unlabeled or past its date goes.
What needs cleaning every day?
- Counters and the table, cleared and wiped.
- The sink, emptied, scrubbed and wiped dry around the faucet.
- Touch points: the fridge, microwave and dishwasher handles, the coffee maker buttons, the faucet, cabinet pulls and the light switch. These are the spots everyone touches. Clean them, then use a disinfectant for the contact time on its label during cold and flu season.
- Trash and recycling, emptied before they overflow.
- Floor, spot-mopped for spills.
How do you deep clean the office fridge?
Once a month, empty it, throw out anything expired, take out the shelves and drawers and wash them in warm soapy water. Wipe the inside with warm water and baking soda, then the door seals. Leave an open box of baking soda on a shelf for odours. Our fridge cleaning guide has the full method.
How do you clean the microwave?
Heat a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar or a few lemon slices for a few minutes, leave the door shut five more, then wipe the inside. The steam loosens the splatter. Wash the turntable in hot soapy water. Do it weekly in a busy office. The full method is in our microwave guide.
How do you clean the coffee maker?
- Daily: empty the grounds and rinse the pot, carafe or drip tray.
- Weekly: wash the removable parts in warm soapy water and wipe the outside and the warming plate.
- Monthly, or as the manual says: descale it with the descaler the maker recommends, or white vinegar and water if the manual allows it, then run plain water through two or three times.
Pod machines need their drip tray emptied and the needle area cleared as the manual describes.
How do you clean the dishwasher and sink?
Pull out and rinse the dishwasher filter weekly, wipe the door seal, and run it empty on hot once a month. For the sink, scrub the basin and the drain basket, and run hot water down the drain. Grease and coffee grounds should go in the trash, not down the drain.
What about the small appliances?
The toaster: unplug it, let it cool and empty the crumb tray weekly. The kettle: descale with vinegar and water, then boil fresh water twice. The water cooler: wipe the spouts and drip tray weekly, and follow the maker's instructions for sanitizing.

FAQ
How often should the office fridge be cleaned out? Clear out old food every week, on one set day, with a posted rule that anything unlabeled goes. Wash the shelves and drawers and wipe the door seals once a month.
Who should clean the office kitchen? Everyone handles their own dishes and spills. The daily wipe-down and the weekly fridge clear-out work best with a named person or a rota, and the deeper jobs can go to whoever cleans the office.
How do you clean a microwave that everyone uses? Heat a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar or lemon for a few minutes, leave the door shut five more, then wipe the inside. Wash the turntable in hot soapy water. A covered-plate rule cuts down the splatter.
What are good office kitchen rules? Keep them short: wash your own dishes or load the dishwasher, wipe up your spills, cover food in the microwave, label what goes in the fridge, and know which day it's cleared out.
