How to clean a fabric couch by its cleaning code

June 11, 2024

To clean a fabric couch, start with the cleaning code on its tag: W means water-based cleaner, S means solvent only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only. Vacuum the whole couch first, cushions off. Then spot-clean with the cleaner the code allows, test it on a hidden spot, blot instead of rubbing, and let it dry fully before anyone sits on it.

The code is the whole game. The wrong cleaner can leave a ring that's worse than the stain.

Where is the cleaning code?

On a tag under the seat cushions or on the underside of the frame. If there's no tag, check the maker's website, or treat it as S and test very carefully.

CodeWhat it meansWhat to use
WWater-based cleaner is fineA few drops of dish soap in warm water, or an upholstery shampoo
SSolvent only, no waterA dry-cleaning solvent or rubbing alcohol
W/S or SWEitherStart with the mildest, soapy water
XVacuum and brush onlyNothing wet; call a professional upholstery cleaner for stains

How do you clean a fabric couch, step by step?

  1. Take the cushions off. Vacuum the deck, the crevices and under the cushions with the crevice tool. Crumbs and coins live there.
  2. Vacuum everything. Upholstery tool over the arms, back and both sides of each cushion.
  3. Test your cleaner on a hidden spot, like the back of a skirt or the underside of a cushion. Wait for it to dry.
  4. Spot-clean. Dampen a white cloth or sponge, not the couch. Blot from the outside of the stain in.
  5. Rinse water-based spots with a cloth barely damp with plain water, and blot dry.
  6. Dry it fast. A fan or an open window. Water left in the foam can leave rings or a musty smell.
  7. Brush the nap with a soft brush once dry, so the fabric looks even.

How do you get common stains out?

  • Food and grease: a drop of dish soap in water on W fabric; solvent on S fabric. Blot.
  • Coffee and wine: blot immediately, then the code-safe cleaner. Don't rub.
  • Ink: rubbing alcohol on a white cloth, dabbed, on W/S or S fabric.
  • Pet accidents: blot up all you can, then an enzyme cleaner on W fabric, by its label.

How do you keep upholstery looking good?

  • Vacuum it weekly with the upholstery tool.
  • Flip and rotate cushions so they wear evenly.
  • Keep it out of strong sun, which fades fabric.
  • Washable throws on the spots that get the most use.
  • Deal with spills right away. Fresh stains come out much easier.

FAQ

What do the cleaning codes on a couch mean? W means water-based cleaner is fine. S means solvent only, no water. W/S or SW means either. X means vacuum and brush only; anything more is for a professional upholstery cleaner.

How do you clean a microfiber couch? Check the code first, since many microfiber couches are S. Vacuum, then dab stains with rubbing alcohol on a white sponge, let it dry, and brush the fibers back up with a soft brush.

Can you put couch cushion covers in the washing machine? Only if the tag says they're washable. Many covers shrink or lose their shape and won't zip back on. When in doubt, spot-clean them on the cushion.

How often should you clean upholstery? Vacuum it weekly, spot-clean spills right away, and give it a deeper clean once or twice a year, or more with pets and kids.
