How to get pet hair off furniture and floors

June 07, 2024

To get pet hair off furniture, wipe the fabric with a slightly damp rubber glove or a rubber pet-hair brush in one direction, so the hair balls up and lifts off, then vacuum the cushions and seams with the upholstery tool. On floors, a rubber broom pulls hair out of corners and rugs before you vacuum. Brush your pet often, and use washable throws on the spots they sleep.

Rubber works because it grabs hair with friction and a little static. It costs almost nothing.

What do you need?

  • Rubber dish gloves
  • A rubber pet-hair brush or a squeegee
  • A rubber broom, or a rubber carpet rake for rugs
  • A vacuum with an upholstery tool and a crevice tool
  • Lint rollers for clothes and lampshades
  • Washable throws or slipcovers

How do you get pet hair off a couch?

  1. Rubber glove first. Dampen it, then wipe across the cushions in one direction. Pull off the clumps as they form.
  2. Vacuum. Upholstery tool across the cushions, crevice tool along the seams and under them.
  3. Lint roller for the arms and any velvet or delicate fabric.
  4. Wash the throws on the spots your pet uses.

How do you get pet hair off floors and rugs?

  • Hardwood and tile: a rubber broom or a dry microfiber mop picks up hair without blowing it around. Then mop.
  • Rugs and carpet: a rubber rake pulls embedded hair to the top. Vacuum slowly, in two directions, and empty the canister often.
  • Stairs: a rowhome stair with carpet runners collects hair at the back of every tread. Use the crevice tool, step by step, from the top down.

Our vacuuming guide covers the technique.

What about bedding and clothes?

Shake bedding outside, or run it in the dryer on no heat for ten minutes before washing to loosen hair. Wash, then clean the lint trap and wipe the washer drum. Keep a lint roller by the door for coats.

How do you keep pet hair down day to day?

  • Brush your pet a few times a week, outside if you can.
  • Throws on their spots, washed weekly.
  • Run a quick rubber-glove pass on the couch every few days.
  • Vacuum high-traffic floors often, especially in shedding season in spring and fall.
  • Change the HVAC filter on schedule.

Check any cleaning product's label before using it where pets lie or eat, and keep products stored where pets can't get to them. Our dust and allergens guide covers the air side of it.
