How to get stains out of school uniforms

September 06, 2024

To get stains out of school uniforms, treat them the day they come home. Rinse the stain from the back with cold water, then use the right remover: enzyme stain remover or detergent for grass, food and sweat, rubbing alcohol for ink, dish soap for grease. Wash by the care label, then air dry and check. A stain that goes through the dryer is much harder to get out.

Uniforms get worn hard and washed often, so a stain kit by the hamper does a lot of work.

What goes in a stain kit?

  • An enzyme stain remover
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol and cotton balls
  • Oxygen bleach powder
  • An old toothbrush

How do you treat each stain?

StainWhat to do
GrassRub in enzyme remover or liquid detergent, wait 15 minutes, wash warm by the label
MudLet it dry, brush it off, then treat what's left with detergent
InkPaper towel underneath, dab rubbing alcohol until it stops transferring, then wash
Ketchup and tomatoScrape, cold rinse from the back, detergent, then wash
Grease and pizzaDish soap worked in with your fingers, then wash warm
ChocolateScrape, cold rinse, enzyme remover, then wash
MarkerRubbing alcohol for permanent; washable marker usually rinses out with cold water and soap
Sweat and collar ringsDetergent or dish soap rubbed in with a toothbrush, then an oxygen bleach soak

Blot, don't rub hard. Test anything new on a hidden seam first.

How do you keep white shirts white?

  • Pre-treat collars and cuffs before every wash.
  • Wash whites with whites.
  • Use an oxygen bleach by its label.
  • Don't overload the washer; clothes need room to move.
  • Line dry in the sun when you can.

What about navy and khaki?

Wash them inside out in cold water to slow fading, and keep them away from bleach. Treat stains the same way, just test any remover on a hidden seam first.

How do you make it a routine?

Check uniforms as they come off: pockets emptied, stains treated, into the hamper. Wash uniforms in their own load once or twice a week. Our bedding stain guide uses the same methods, and our back-to-school decluttering guide covers the closets.
